Introducing Laurie MacCaskill
For Cancer Survivor Month, I proudly celebrate all of you survivors in the cancer world. I applaud your courage, determination, and perseverance to never give up.
Only now, after 16 years as a survivor of one of the world’s deadliest cancers, pancreatic, can I say I embrace and recognize the gifts this journey has provided. After four years of treatment, many excruciating surgeries, endless complications, and a death sentence of 3-6 months to live, I have survived. Throughout this very special month, I will share with you how I managed expectations and used my mindset and vulnerability to redefine the lens in which I view life. You will learn about the latest research, resources, genetic testing and more to move forward as your own best advocate! This is just a chapter in your life, not the whole story.
I believe I survived pancreatic cancer because I took action and I did the following:
- I listened to my body. I trusted my instincts
- I did not take no for answer.
- I persevered regardless of doctors’ dismissals (“Laurie, nothing is wrong; it’s your imagination”).
- I researched doctors specializing in my cancer. So important.
- I took baby steps, so much easier to manage this way.
- I persisted and I didn’t accept appointments so far out – I continued to call for cancellations to secure an earlier appointment.
- I did just enough research to satisfy my immediate needs. This can get very overwhelming and delay important decisions.
- I limited advice I received from others. And only after I was more knowledgeable about my plan and healthcare team did I review my notes on referrals and acted if necessary. It’s important to make all of this manageable.
- I asked for help—attending appointments, connecting with doctors, taking notes in sessions. Another set of ears makes all the difference.
- Prior to new appointments, I requested forms in advance, which allowed me to complete at home with ease and access to important information.
- I recognized my fears and my concerns.
And now I couldn’t be happier to be working with REALM and its businesses Ambry and Invicro! Their work and support for all cancer patients is really unmatched. Stay tuned for more about my journey throughout this very special month.
